Through survey-based research, world tech experts share prediction as to how people born in Generation Always-ON will reshape the world. Genreation Always-On are people born in the early ‘90’s or later. This generation was born and raised having open and complete access to social media and as the article (2012) states, “they have grown up in a world that has come to offer them instant access to nearly the entirety of human knowledge, and incredible opportunities to connect, create and collaborate" (Anderson, p.1)
It is widely agreed upon that because of the extensive and growing use of the world-wide-web, human brains are being rewired with the Internet acting as an external brain.
Some experts believe that this will positively affect society in the future by increasing collaboration, encouraging informational research, and connecting the world more closely.
Other experts argue that it will have a negative impact on the future because of side effects including future generations inability to concentrate, have patience, or think deeply.
I feel that there will be mixed results. On the negative side, I do believe that this generation will become overwhelmingly fixated with instant gratification and constant informational updating. This will potentially result in less productivity, shortened attention spans, and the production of less meaningful information. On the upside, I believe this same generation will be able to multi-task and when used properly, find and utilize information so that it is more accessible to the rest of the world. There will be a shift in which becoming a responsible member of the web community becomes a priority. With so much noise out there, at some point we will need to learn how to sift through the nonsense and find truly meaningful data.
I also believe as a society we will put a formal importance on “un-plugging” and meditation as a way to unwind from the constant informational overload our technology offers. In my opinion, the Internet is like the Wild West right now and we are all just running around without direction. As it becomes more integrated into our lives we will find ways to balance so that we can take advantage of the benefits while not getting lost.
