It is important that we instill an attacking mentality into our players from a young age. Give defenders the freedom to attack, take space and make an offensive impact on the game. Force them to cover a lot of ground, teaching them to be dynamic and multifunctional.
My U11 Girls team played in the Nor Cal Premier Cross Regional Finals last weekend. They played amazing! I counted my right back overlapped into the opposing teams final third 15 times. The other teams outside back entered my final third once. For me this is a crime against Football. While my player overlaps at will, attacking, going one on one, creating combinations and goal scoring opportunities 15 – 20 times a game, the opposing outside back defends. How then do you expect that player to ever be a daring player, one who is confident in taking a calculated risk for the benefit of excellent football and team result. My player will have overlapped 20 times a game over the course of 40 games a season for the next (6) years. She will have overlapped in a game 4,800 times covering 336,000 yards while the opposing outside back sits at the half line waiting for my team to lose the ball so they can complete their defensive function. It just doesn’t add up, teach your players to be daring, attack minded, risk takers, and creative, do not shackle them up forcing them to be one dimensional.
You should know we lost the final 2-3.
